Basic Information of English Grammar: Friends, you all know that to understand English well, it is very important to have basic knowledge of English grammar. If you do not know about the basics, then how can you understand English grammar well. In this post, we are going to talk about some such things of English which you hardly know.

Basic Information of English Grammar

The most basic of English Grammar is Alphabet, there is nothing more basic than this. Alphabet means a, b, c, d … z etc. Hopefully you all already know about it. And you will also know that there are total 26 alphabets in English. Out of which 5 are Vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and 20 are Consonants. ‘y’ is called Semi Vowel.

  • Vowel: a, e, i, o, u
  • Consonant: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n ,p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, z
  • Semi Vowel: y

Maybe you all have this question in your mind that why is ‘y’ called a semi vowel. So let us tell you that ‘y’ is called a semi vowel because ‘y’ is sometimes pronounced as a vowel and sometimes as a consonant.

Example: Cry, Fly – Here in cry, fly, you can see that the sound vowel has been used. Whereas in You – u, a consonant has been used, so we call ‘y’ a semi vowel.

  • The smallest unit of English is ‘Letter’.
  • The smallest unit of language is sound.

How many sounds are formed from 26 letters?

Let us tell you that every letter has some sound, with the help of which we make new words. You all know that there are total 26 letters in English grammar, out of which 5 are Vowel, 20 are Consonant and 1 is Semi Vowel. All these have total 46 sounds. Out of which 22 sounds are of Vowel and 24 sounds are of Consonant.

Example: Vowel: a,e,i,o,u – Car – (आ) – Here ‘a’ is pronounced as ‘aa’. Whereas in Cat ‘a’ is pronounced as ‘ee’.

Consonant: Charge – In charge ‘ch’ is pronounced as ‘ch’. Whereas in Chemistry ‘ch’ is pronounced as ‘ka’. From this you must have guessed that how the sound is changing at every moment.

Sound: It is the smallest unit of language.

Letter: It is the smallest unit of English.

Example: a,b,c,d,…,z

Word: A group of letters which have some meaning is called a word. If that group has no meaning then we will not call it a word.

Example: Cat, Car, Ram – Ram is called a word because Ram gives us a sense of a name. Whereas if we talk about Amr, it has no meaning, so it is not a word.

Sentence: A group of words which have some meaning is called a sentence.

Example: She has a pen.

Paragraph / Speech: A group of sentences is called a Paragraph/Speech.

Example: Rahul is a good boy. He lives in Patna with Family.

Alphabet (A-Z)

You all know that letter is the smallest unit of English. Letter can be basically divided into two parts.

  1. Written – written by hand.
  2. Oral – spoken by mouth.
  1. Written: It is of two types. First Capital (A, B, C, D…Z) and second Small (a, b, c, d…z)
  2. Oral: It is also of two types. First Vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and second Consonant (b, c, d, f…z)

Note: Any sentence is mainly made up of three parts. First Subject, second Verb and third Object. On the basis of this structure, a sentence of English grammar is formed.
