Collective Noun को हिंदी में ‘सामूहिक संज्ञा’ कहते है|
What is Collective Noun?
Collective noun is a special noun which tells us about a group or collection. Like- People, Cattle, Machinery etc. People make us feel like a special group. Therefore, people can be called a collective noun.
Example: People, Cattle, Machinery etc.
Collective Noun in Hindi
कलेक्टिव नाउन उस स्पेशल नाउन को कहते है, जो हमें किसी ग्रुप या कलेक्शन का बोध करता हैं| जैसे- People, Cattle, Machinery आदि| People हमें स्पेशल कोई ग्रुप का बोध करता है| इसलिए पीपल को कलेक्टिव नाउन कह सकते हैं|
उदहारण: लोग, मवेशी, यंत्रों का समूह आदि|
Types of Collective Noun
There are three types of Collective Noun:
1. Generalising Collective Noun
A collection (Collective Noun) that is made of different types of members is called Generalising Collective Noun.
Example: Scenery (प्राकृतिक दृश्य), Machinery (सभी प्रकार की मशीन), Jewellery, Crockery (वर्तन का समूह), Furniture, Luggage etc.
Fact (1): It is singular & gets singular verb.
Fact (2): ‘S’ or ‘es’ does not come with it.
Example: The Scenery of Kashmir are very eye-catching. (x) / The Sceneries of Kashmir are very eye-catching. (x) / The Scenery of Kashmir is very eye-catching. (✓)
2. Group Collective Noun
A Collection (Collective Noun) that is made of the same kind of members is called Group Collective Noun.
Example: People, Public, Cattle (पशु), Gentry (सभ्य समाज), Peasantry (कृषक समाज), Cavalry (घुड़सवार सेना) etc.
Fact (1): It is Plural and get’s plural verb.
Fact (2): ‘s’ or ‘es’ does not come with it.
Example: The Peasantry of this village has attended the seminar. (x) / The Peasantry of this village have attended the seminar. (✓)
Note: ध्यान रहे कि People का प्रयोग Country के अर्थ में भी किया जाता है और इस स्थिति में इसे Common Noun का स्वरुप मानते हुए, इसे Singular या Plural form में बदला जा सकता है|
Example: India is a People of Asia. (✓) / India, China and Pakistan are people of Asia. (✓)
3. Distributive Collective Noun
A Collection (Collective Noun) that members are either unanimous (एकमत) or different (विभिन्न) in opinion, there is no certainty for it, is called Distributive Collective Noun.
Example: Jury, Committee, Parliament etc.
Fact (1): यदि उपरोक्त का प्रयोग संस्थागत रूप में हो अथवा विचारों का एक मत दर्शाना हो तो, इन्हें singular स्वरुप में रखते हुए verb singular दिया जाता है|
Example: The jury have taken of built a sleep in this case. (x) / The jury has taken of built a sleep in this case. (✓)
Fact (2): यदि उपरोक्त स्वरुप के तहत उनके सदस्यों की चर्चा हो अथवा सदस्यों के विचारों की विभिन्नता की बात की जाये तो इन्हें plural माना जाता है तथा verb plural दिया जाता है|
Example: The jury have taken their seats. (✓) / The jury are not infinite members on their points. (✓)
Facts (3): ‘s’ or ‘es’ does not come with it.

- एक गण सिपाहियों सीमा पर तैनात है। (A squad of soldiers is stationed at the border.)
- एक दल बौने रोगी अस्पताल में भर्ती है। (A group of sick patients is admitted to the hospital.)
- एक समूह कुत्ते बाजार में भटक रहा है। (A pack of dogs is wandering in the market.)
- एक दल लोग उत्सव में भाग ले रहा है। (A troop of people is participating in the festival.)
- एक समूह बिल्लियाँ घर के चारों ओर चल रहा है। (A group of cats is walking around the house.)
- एक गण मछलियों नदी में तैर रहा है। (A shoal of fish is swimming in the river.)
- एक झुंड चींटियों किचन में घूम रहा है। (A swarm of ants is roaming in the kitchen.)
- एक बड़ा गुच्छा लोग बाजार में बात कर रहा है। (A large bunch of people is chatting in the market.)
- एक समूह गधे किसान की फसल को खाता है। (A group of donkeys is eating the farmer’s crops.)
- एक झुंड चिड़िया चप्पल पर बैठा है। (A flock of birds is perched on the roof.)

- एक दल बिल्लियाँ गार्डन में धारावाहिक कर रहा है। (A gang of cats is starring in the garden.)
