Past Continuous Tense In Hindi: Rules, Examples With 100 Sentences: The Past Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing at a specific time in the past. It often corresponds to the English Past Continuous Tense, like “was doing” or “were doing.”

(भूतकाल सतत काल का उपयोग उन कार्यों का वर्णन करने के लिए किया जाता है जो अतीत में किसी विशिष्ट समय पर चल रहे थे। यह अक्सर अंग्रेजी के भूतकाल सतत काल से मेल खाता है, जैसे “कर रहा था” या “कर रहे थे।”)

St: S + was/were + V₄ + O

Past Continuous Tense के सभी रूल्स और फॉर्म्स में इसी स्ट्रक्चर का उपयोग किया जाता है|

— जिस हिंदी वाक्य के क्रिया के अंत में रहा था/ रही थी/ रहे थे इत्यादि लगा हुआ रहे, उसे Past continuous tense का वाक्य माना जाता हैं|

Rule and Uses:

[1.] A past continued action is kept in past continuous tense. (भूतकाल में जारी क्रिया को भूतकाल निरंतर काल में रखा जाता है।)

Example: मोहन क्रिकेट खेल रहा था / मोहन का क्रिकेट खेल जारी था etc – Mohan was playing Cricket.

1. She was reading a book. : वह एक किताब पढ़ रही थी।
2. They were watching a movie. : वे एक फिल्म देख रहे थे।
3. I was cooking dinner. : मैं खाना बना रहा था।
4. The children were playing outside. : बच्चे बाहर खेल रहे थे।
5. He was working late last night. : वह पिछले रात देर तक काम कर रहा था।
6. We were having a meeting when you called. : हम बैठक कर रहे थे जब तुमने फोन किया।
7. She was waiting for the bus. : वह बस का इंतजार कर रही थी।
8. The dog was barking loudly. : कुत्ता जोर से भौंक रहा था।
9. He was studying for his exams. : वह अपनी परीक्षा के लिए पढ़ाई कर रहा था।
10. Mohan was playing cricket. : मोहन क्रिकेट खेल रहा था।

[2.] To show a past momentary habitual action in past. (अतीत में हुई किसी क्षणिक आदतन क्रिया को दर्शाना।)

Example: During Holi, he was drinking wine.

1. During Holi, he was drinking wine. होली के दौरान, वह शराब पी रहा था।
2. Every evening, she was jogging in the park. हर शाम, वह पार्क में जॉगिंग कर रही थी।
3. In winter, they were having hot chocolate every day. सर्दियों में, वे हर दिन हॉट चॉकलेट पी रहे थे।
4. At that time, he was going to the gym regularly. उस समय, वह नियमित रूप से जिम जा रहा था।
5. During summer vacations, the kids were playing outside all day. गर्मियों की छुट्टियों के दौरान, बच्चे पूरे दिन बाहर खेल रहे थे।
6. She was attending yoga classes every morning. वह हर सुबह योग क्लासेज ले रही थी।
7. They were visiting their grandparents every weekend. वे हर सप्ताहांत अपने दादा-दादी से मिलने जाते थे।
8. He was reading the newspaper every morning. वह हर सुबह अखबार पढ़ रहा था।
9. In college, he was practicing guitar daily. कॉलेज में, वह रोज गिटार अभ्यास करता था।
10. During the summer camp, the children were singing songs every evening. Hindi: समर कैंप के दौरान, बच्चे हर शाम गाने गा रहे थे।

[3.] To show a past momentary action. (किसी भूतकाल की क्षणिक क्रिया को दर्शाने के लिए।)

Example: Raju was sleeping. / He was standing & i was seating.

1. English: Raju was sleeping. Hindi: राजू सो रहा था।
2. English: He was standing by the window. Hindi: वह खिड़की के पास खड़ा था।
3. English: She was cooking when the phone rang. Hindi: वह खाना बना रही थी जब फोन बजा।
4. English: They were watching TV. Hindi: वे टीवी देख रहे थे।
5. English: I was reading a novel. Hindi: मैं एक उपन्यास पढ़ रहा था।
6. English: She was talking to her friend. Hindi: वह अपनी दोस्त से बात कर रही थी।
7. English: He was writing a letter. Hindi: वह एक पत्र लिख रहा था।
8. English: We were discussing the project. Hindi: हम परियोजना पर चर्चा कर रहे थे।
9. English: The kids were laughing loudly. Hindi: बच्चे जोर से हंस रहे थे।
10. English: She was painting the room. Hindi: वह कमरे को रंग रही थी।

[4.] यदि भूतकाल में कोई action पहले से जरी हो और उसके साथ किसी अन्य घटना के साथ Condition लगे तो पहले से जारी Action, Past continuous होता है, जबकि बाधित करने वाला घटना Past Indefinite में रहती हैं|

Example: She was dancing when i called her name. / When i went there, he was dancing on the stage.

1. English: She was dancing when I called her name. Hindi: वह नाच रही थी जब मैंने उसका नाम पुकारा।
2. English: When I went there, he was dancing on the stage. Hindi: जब मैं वहां गया, वह मंच पर नाच रहा था।
3. English: They were eating dinner when the lights went out. Hindi: वे रात का खाना खा रहे थे जब बत्ती गुल हो गई।
4. English: I was studying while he was watching TV. Hindi: मैं पढ़ाई कर रहा था जबकि वह टीवी देख रहा था।
5. English: She was reading a book when it started to rain. Hindi: वह किताब पढ़ रही थी जब बारिश शुरू हो गई।
6. English: He was writing the report when his computer crashed. Hindi: वह रिपोर्ट लिख रहा था जब उसका कंप्यूटर क्रैश हो गया।
7. English: We were playing football when it got dark. Hindi: हम फुटबॉल खेल रहे थे जब अंधेरा हो गया।
8. English: She was cooking while he was setting the table. Hindi: वह खाना बना रही थी जबकि वह मेज़ सजा रहा था।
9. English: They were chatting when the doorbell rang. Hindi: वे बातें कर रहे थे जब दरवाज़े की घंटी बजी।
10. English: I was walking to the office when I met her. Hindi: मैं दफ़्तर जा रहा था जब मैंने उससे मिला।

[5.] Two past actions connected with while are kept in past continuous tense. (while से जुड़ी दो भूतकालीन क्रियाओं को भूतकाल सतत काल में रखा जाता है।

Example: She was dancing while, i was singing.

1. English: She was dancing while I was singing. Hindi: वह नाच रही थी जबकि मैं गा रहा था।
2. English: They were eating while I was cooking. Hindi: वे खाना खा रहे थे जबकि मैं खाना बना रहा था।
3. English: He was studying while his friends were playing outside. Hindi: वह पढ़ाई कर रहा था जबकि उसके दोस्त बाहर खेल रहे थे।
4. English: She was drawing while he was reading a book. Hindi: वह ड्राइंग कर रही थी जबकि वह किताब पढ़ रहा था।
5. English: They were traveling while we were resting at home. Hindi: वे यात्रा कर रहे थे जबकि हम घर पर आराम कर रहे थे।
6. English: I was writing emails while she was attending the meeting. Hindi: मैं ईमेल लिख रहा था जबकि वह बैठक में थी।
7. English: We were watching a movie while it was raining outside. Hindi: हम फिल्म देख रहे थे जबकि बाहर बारिश हो रही थी।

Example: Last month he played cricket now. (x) / Last month he was playing cricket now. (✓)

1. English: Last month he played cricket. Hindi: पिछले महीने वह क्रिकेट खेल रहा था।
2. English: Yesterday, she was cooking dinner. Hindi: कल, वह खाना बना रही थी।
3. English: Earlier this year, they were traveling across Europe. Hindi: इस साल पहले, वे यूरोप की यात्रा कर रहे थे।
4. English: Two days ago, he was studying in the library. Hindi: दो दिन पहले, वह लाइब्रेरी में पढ़ाई कर रहा था।
5. English: A week ago, she was attending a conference. Hindi: एक सप्ताह पहले, वह एक सम्मेलन में भाग ले रही थी।
6. English: At that time, they were working on a new project. Hindi: उस समय, वे एक नए प्रोजेक्ट पर काम कर रहे थे।
