Past Continuous Tense With Rules, Structure And Sentences : The Past Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing or in progress at a specific moment in the past. It can also provide background information in a narrative or indicate that one action was happening while another action occurred.

St: S + was/were + V₄ + O

— The English sentence which has ‘was/ were’ at the end of the verb is considered as a sentence of Past continuous tense.

Rule and Uses:

[1.] A past continued action is kept in past continuous tense.

Example:

1. I was reading a book when the lights went out.
2. She was walking to the store when it started to rain.
3. They were watching TV while the kids were playing outside.
4. : He was writing an email when his computer crashed.
5. We were cooking dinner when the guests arrived.
6. The students were taking notes during the lecture.
7. She was driving home from work when she heard the news.
8. I was jogging in the park when I met an old friend.
9. They were discussing the project when the power went out.
10. He was painting the house while his wife was gardening.

[2.] To show a past momentary habitual action in past.

Example: During Holi, he was drinking wine.

1. During summer vacations, he was swimming in the lake every day.
2. At that time, she was always reading novels in the evenings.
3. Every Saturday, they were going to the farmer’s market.
4. In high school, he was practicing the piano every afternoon.
5. During the holidays, they were baking cookies together.
6. : Every morning, she was jogging around the neighborhood.
7. When he was young, he was collecting stamps as a hobby.
8. At college, she was attending dance classes regularly.
9. Every weekend, he was visiting his grandparents.
10. During the winter, they were skiing in the mountains frequently.

[3.] To show a past momentary action.

Example: Raju was sleeping. / He was standing & i was seating.

1. Raju was sleeping when the alarm rang.
2. She was standing in line at the ticket counter.
3. They were eating breakfast when the doorbell rang.
4. He was reading the newspaper when his friend called.
5. I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
6. She was writing a letter when the electricity went out.
7. We were talking about the movie when it started to snow.
8. He was shopping for groceries when he ran into an old colleague.
9. : They were watching a movie when the power went off.
10. : I was painting the room when I spilled the paint.

[4.] If an action is already going on in the past and a condition is attached to it with some other event, then the already ongoing action is Past continuous, while the interrupting event remains in Past Indefinite.

Example: She was dancing when i called her name. / When i went there, he was dancing on the stage.

1. She was practicing yoga when her phone rang.
2. I was reading a book when the cat jumped on my lap.
3. They were having a picnic when it suddenly started to rain.
4. He was studying for his exams when his friends arrived.
5. We were discussing our plans when the power outage occurred.
6. She was cooking dinner when the oven broke down.
7. : They were playing cards when the doorbell rang.
8. I was writing a report when my computer crashed.
9. : He was fixing the car when the tools fell.
10. She was knitting a sweater when the yarn got tangled.

[5.] Two past actions connected with while are kept in past continuous tense.

Example: She was dancing while, i was singing.

1. She was studying while he was cooking dinner.
2. They were playing football while I was watching from the sidelines.
3. He was reading a book while his friend was playing video games.
4. She was making a presentation while her colleague was preparing the data.
5. We were chatting while they were setting up the decorations.
6. : The kids were building a sandcastle while their parents were relaxing.
7. He was driving to work while his partner was reviewing the schedule.
8. They were hiking up the trail while the sun was setting.
9. She was drawing a sketch while he was painting the canvas.
10. I was organizing my closet while my sister was cleaning the kitchen.

[6.] Last / Past / Before / Ago / Yesterday / Then / Earlier / Previous / That time… etc + Now / This time / These days / At present / At the moment = Past

Example: Last month he played cricket now. (x) / Last month he was playing cricket now. (✓)

1. Last week, he was traveling to New York.
2. A few days ago, she was visiting her relatives.
3. Before the meeting, he was preparing the report.
4. Earlier this year, they were planning their vacation.
5. Two months ago, she was studying abroad.
6. Yesterday, I was working on a new project.
7. At that time, they were learning to play the guitar.
8. The previous summer, he was working on a farm.
9. That time, she was focusing on her career goals.
10. A year ago, we were exploring different cities.
